Buxton Crescent Hotel
Best for: Period Splendor
It took 17 years and some £70million to turn the once derelict Buxton Crescent into a spa hotel. Situated opposite St Anne’s Well, the Grade I listed crescent sits atop a hot spring, which pumps one million liters a day into the Peak District town. The building has been beautifully restored to its Georgian glory — its 81 rooms are suitably grand with freestanding baths and views of the landscaped municipal gardens. The spa itself has naturally heated thermal pools, which are surrounded by original tiling and ironwork. Treatments include underwater jet massages and a salt grotto, plus a fabulous rooftop pool for swimming in the pouring Derbyshire rain. After a day spent in the thermal waters, go to the hotel restaurant: half a dozen oysters and a whole sole with lemon are enough.
Stella likes: The meeting rooms, which adjoin the hotel – an 18th century ballroom that can accommodate 120 people. The hand-painted ceiling alone is worth a visit.
Outside : The Victorian Pavilion Gardens at Buxton, a few minutes from the hotel, are home to a gallery, greenhouse and tea rooms. The Buxton Opera House is also located behind the hotel (buxtonoperahouse.org.uk) The Cavendish Arcade next to the hotel has a lovely beer garden and shops.
To book: Rooms from £155 a night, B&B; ensanahotels.com/buxton. Read our expert opinion here.
Chandler’s Cross, Hertfordshire
Best for: Instant relaxation
From bonfire nights to beach parties, this celebrity-popular hotel is the perfect place to celebrate an occasion and prides itself on attention to detail (attention to urban beach and art audacious contemporary). A huge draw is the award-winning Sequoia Spa with its black mosaic pool, specialized treatments, and the promise of instant relaxation. There are three restaurants, but you won’t go wrong with The Glasshouse, which offers buffets for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. All-you-can-eat sushi is a must.
