Just in time for Halloween, the Phasmophobia development team released the latest (and arguably scariest) update to Nightmare. Horror gamers and Twitch streamers have flocked to the game for thrilling new jumpscares and festive scares in the all-new update.

Since the co-op horror game launched in September 2020, the Phasmophobia development team has been proud to keep the content new and fresh, and the Nightmare update was no different. The new update included everything from rebalancing difficulties to all-new ghosts, and even a new camping map to explore. improve various in-game effects like visuals and sound to further immerse Ghostbusters players in their worst fears.

Maple Lodge Campground is the new mid-size map

The most obvious new addition to Phasmophobia is the all-new Maple Lodge Campground Map. A mid-sized map with a log cabin, haunted lake, and various large tents spread across the site, this is the first outdoor map ever included in Phasmophobia.

With increased visual quality for more realism, the new campsite map also contains picnic areas, an outdoor generator, and games that both living and dead players can interact with. While the Ghostbusters van is still out of ghost reach, it brings a chilling realization that there may be options to include outdoor hunts for other maps in the future.

The difficulties have been reworked …

All of the original difficulty levels – Amateur, Intermediate, and Professional – have been redesigned to make each contract more unique and accommodate players of all skill levels. This came with a variety of differences, such as doors starting already open for some difficulties (rather than just the ghost room).

Other changes to difficulty levels include whether the fuse box is turned on or off at the start of each contract, how much Sanity is recovered from Sanity Pills, and how many hiding places are available for players during the contract. In Pro mode, ghosts can now also move their favorite room after moving (although this is supposed to be on rare occasions).

… And Nightmare Mode is available as a new difficulty

The addition of the Nightmare difficulty to Phasmophobia has sown terror in the hearts of even the most seasoned Ghostbusters. Designed as a highly stimulating mode for adrenaline junkies and ghost hunters alike, Nightmare Mode has brought unexpected and never-before-seen features to the game..

The new difficulty includes new challenges, such as longer hunts, fewer hiding places, and a reduced ability of sanity pills to restore sanity. Extremely difficult features include the ability to kill a second time in a single hunt, withholding a type of evidence to determine the type of ghost, as well as some surveillance gear that kicks off right off the bat.

Four new types of ghosts to find

There are now a total of 20 different ghost types to identify in Phasmophobia thanks to the new Nightmare update. The Onryo, known as “the Wrathful Spirit,” is terrified of fire, but is fatal after the fire is extinguished. The Twins, as the name suggests, appear as a pair of ghosts, but can wreak havoc in different parts of the map separately.

The Obake is known as a shapeshifter and is known to leave behind unique evidence such as a six finger handprint. The last additional ghost, the Raiju, uses the power of players’ equipment to harness his powers, making him a formidable foe to face.

Weather affects your gameplay

Each new contract now introduces a weather element into Phasmophobia gameplay, which can affect player experiences in unique ways. Heavy fog can reduce a player’s visibility and make it more difficult to spot ghost evidence. Temperature changes due to snow can affect how evidence of freezing temperature can be found.

Perhaps most terrifying of all, heavy rain, wind, and thunder can interfere with the player’s hearing, as well as interfere with equipment such as the satellite dish microphone. This different weather cycle with each game adds an interesting extra challenge to the game.

Sound reviews for ghosts and gamers

Playing more in increased realism, the sound design of the Phasmophobia Nightmare update has been revised several times. For example, the ghost’s resounding footsteps are only heard when the ghost is actually moving, so it’s harder to tell when the hunt has started or ended by the sound alone.

Phantom sounds, such as croaking, chanting, and player heartbeat, will also subside, with a volume reduced to amplify the creep factor. Other jumpscares like window shots have also been updated so they can be heard on the satellite dish.

Visual changes for fingerprints and bone evidence

Bad news for all players who just do a quick swipe with a UV flashlight before rushing to the safety of the van – now there’s a small chance the ghosts won’t leave fingerprints when they interact with the environment. In an even crueler twist, fingerprints now disappear after 60 seconds, so Ghostbusters have to be quick with the camera or risk losing vital income.

Bone evidence, while previously a standardized model resembling chicken bones, now has updated visuals. It can now appear as a random bone in the human body, from hip bones to full spines.

New ghost behaviors for a normal game …

There has been a complete overhaul of many ‘usual’ ghost behaviors during a contract. Ouija boards have been revamped so that players’ sanity is less penalized for unsuccessful communications, but can greatly deplete sanity if they receive a response.

Ghosts will also now have more impact on equipment, disrupting electronics when visible, lighting showers in certain areas, and blowing out lighters as well as candles. Roaming behaviors have been reduced, so ghosts don’t roam too far on a map, and all ghost events last at least one second.

… And new ghost behaviors during hunts

Hunts have also been adapted to accommodate more difficult gameplay. Ghosts are more sensitive to electronic equipment during hunts, as they are attracted to walkie-talkies, thermometers, and EMF readers. Walkie-talkies also only play static sounds when players are near the ghost.

While the ghost speed has been increased when chasing players, it’s nice to see the devs throwing a bone at players. To help new players a bit, the duration of each Ghost Hunt has been reduced on small and medium maps.

Player lobby, journal and map improvements

The behaviors and struggles of ghosts aren’t the only ones that have undergone a massive overhaul. Fortunately, the developers included a much needed UI overhaul in the latest Phasmophobia update. Average sanity is now accurate, rather than random. The truck map screen has received refreshing new icons, as well as the ability for players to choose any contract on the map screen right off the bat.

The map description has been changed to describe the difficulty instead (which may be of most concern to players!), And the contract difficulty will always default to the one played previously. Gone are the days of accidental pro rounding for unsuspecting beginners!
