Free Scrap Metal Recycling for Union County Residents – Union County

Union County residents can take their old or unwanted scrap metal to free recycling sites sponsored by the Union County Board of Commissioners. Metal cabinets, hangers, appliances, gutters, kitchen utensils, and many other metal items are accepted at these sites.

“Scrap metal recycling is an important way to conserve resources, and we encourage every household to use this free service,” Union County Commissioner Chairperson Rebecca L. Williams said. “These drop sites make it easy and convenient to clean your home and yard of unwanted metal objects while helping the environment.”

Union County’s scrap yard program operates at two sites, Cranford and Rahway.

Both sites are open to all Union County residents, regardless of city of origin.

The sites are available at the depot on the first Thursday morning and the third Saturday morning of each month, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The upcoming locations and dates/times in September are:

  • Cranford: Emergency Services Building, 151 Kenilworth Boulevard, Thursday, September 1 and Saturday, September 17, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Rahway: Rahway River Park, follow Park Drive from St. Georges Avenue to the service yard across from the pool, Thursday, September 1 and Saturday, September 17, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Items accepted for recycling include, but are not limited to, air conditioners, scrap aluminum, aluminum siding, bicycles, brass, copper, dishwashers, electric fans, fences, freezers, gutters, irons, garden furniture, metal cupboards, metal sheds, microwaves. , pots and pans, railings, refrigerators, stoves, tire rims, toasters, washers and dryers, window frames (without glass) and wire hangers.

Please note: these events are drive-up only and non-contact. Participants must remain in their vehicle at all times. Materials should be placed in the trunk, loading area or truck bed and easily accessible for personnel to remove.

The Union County Scrap Metal Program runs monthly from April through November each year. All events take place at the Rahway and Cranford locations, on designated mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The remaining dates for 2022 are October 6, October 15 and November 19.
