Tim Allen says ‘Lightyear’ ‘has nothing to do with Buzz’

Pixar’s return to theaters hasn’t gone as well as the animation studio would have hoped. So far Light year grossed just $97 million in the United States, making it Pixarlowest US release ever, excluding Aheadwhich opened on March 6, 2020, just before multiplexes around the world closed at the start of the Covid pandemic.

Whether Light yearword of mouth is good, it might sneak in The good dinosaur and move up one spot on the company’s all-time gross revenue list. But The good dinosaur is widely considered Pixar’s worst film. It’s not a good company, financially if not creatively.

Some observers are scratching their heads about the film’s struggle to connect with audiences. It features one of Pixar’s most popular characters, Buzz Lightyear, in an all-new, stunningly beautiful adventure. So what was wrong?

Some have criticized the film for not connecting strongly enough to the toy story franchise where Buzz comes from. And that’s true; it is not a movie about a Buzz Lightyear toy. The concept is rather than this is the movie that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy all those decades ago.

Others complained that the film should have featured Buzz’s original voice, Tim Allen. (In Light yearthe character was played by Chris Evans.) Allen himself was asked about the film’s performance by in additionand while he didn’t necessarily say the movie would have been better had it been there, he did say he wished the movie had “a better connection” with his Buzz and the toy story movies, and that there’s hardly any Buzz without Woody – and there’s no Woody in Light year.

“It has nothing to do with Buzz,” he added. “It’s just that there is no connection.” He also said that the idea for the project came up years before, but he believed that if Pixar had made the film, they would do it in live-action, not animation.

Allen also claimed that “the horns that did the first four movies” weren’t involved in Light year, and that “a whole new team that really has nothing to do with the first movies” created this one. In reality, Light year director Angus MacLaine worked on toy story 2, 3and 4 as an animator and member of Pixar’s senior creative team. He also led Toy Story of Terror! in 2013, which included Allen as Buzz.

Light year is in theaters now. And no matter who made it, or whatever the reasons it wasn’t a huge hit, it’s a solid movie. You can watch Allen’s full comments at Light year at in addition below.
